“flying on winds over oceans vast
back
to love's source”

Flying

Simon Rees

   I

But not to fly -
not to fly -
that is not the reason why

It wasn't to hear
the waves that smash

Nor feel
the loss

Not for gold, fame
nor for want of pleasures without shame

Oh no, it was neither ill at ease
nor sated

that free-falling
steadfastly
into void,

plunging ever deeper, further
away, away
from love

he let himself go

   II

A distant voice
cried in desolation
when those waves smashed,

then realized the reason why,

as flying on winds over oceans vast
back
to love's source
he returned

And with him the memory
of something so utterly precious,
so completely right,

that the only fear possible was of damaging it:

This was the reason why

   III

A heron on the wing
passed,
rays of sunlight in its feathers,

and in its passage was continuity;
a continuum of love from which there was no departure
